.BRIEF BACKGROUND OF ST.ANDREW’S BIIKIRA HEALTH CENTRE:

St. Andrew Community Health Centre Biikira is private not for profit health facility owned by the Diocese of Masaka. It is located in Biikira village, Kigenya Parish, Kasaali sub-county, Kyotera District in Southern Uganda. Its district catchment area is Kasaali sub-county with a population of 2700. It was founded by the White Fathers as part of their evangelization process in 1928.

It was later handed over to the Lay staff, the Grail Ladies and since 1987, it is in the administration of the Little Sister of St. Francis of Assisi. Their contribution has enabled the center to develop from being a small underutilized dispensary/maternity to the third largest health unit in the district. The facility offers in and outpatient services, laboratory diagnostic services, maternal and child health care services, Scan services, Major and Minor operations services HIV/AIDS care and treatment services, school health and immunization programs, and Tuberculosis care and treatment services.

The unit was founded purposely to give medical help to all who are in need of it, regardless of their religion, tribe, color, race, nationality or social status. The services offered are to witness Christian love, which dedicates itself to help restore, maintain the dignity and well being of the individual person. The chief aim of the facility was and still is to prevent diseases, promote life, cure diseases and relieve pain.

The overall objectives of the Community Health Centre programme are:-

  1. To contribute towards decreasing the morbidity statistics in our district of Kyotera by improving access to health care in the catchment area.
  2. To facilitate community mobilization and assist self sufficient in particular matters relating to their health.

The facility has now a full time Medical Doctor with a lot of experience.
